Subscription Management Systems – fit for many purposes |

There is a danger whenever we name anything that by choosing a name we immediately circumscribe it to apply to a more narrow field of activity than that to which in reality it can apply. 'Subscription Management System' is one such name.
On the surface it seems only to apply to the management of subscriptions but in reality such systems can and do cater for much more. They should really be called sales and marketing, shopping or business management systems.
It is worth expanding on this just in case the customary use of the name blinds us to the true capabilities on offer and we risk going off to put together a home-built substitute.

The project has included the provision for archive content, previously only published in hardcopy, to be rekeyed in XML and PDF.

Will Google’s Newspass make paywalls obsolete? |

Although Google has not yet confirmed or denied the imminent launch of their Newspass service, the mediaverse is having great fun in guessing its likely impact, particularly in relation to Murdoch’s recently-raised paywalls.
The news first appeared in Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper and seems to confirm stories that were circulating late last year. The paper says that Google is canvassing journals about their interest in participating in this pre-payment scheme.
