A study conducted by Black Duck Software found that open source projects for Google's Android platform outstripped those for Apple's iPhone in 2009.
Developers working on the Android operating system began 224 new open source projects last year, an increase of 168% on the previous year. This brings the total number of open source projects for the Google mobile platform to a total of 357.
In contrast, only 76 new open source software projects were started in 2009 for the iPhone, a 43% growth on the previous year. The report found that there were 252 open source projects for the iPhone in total.
The trend for developing open source software for mobile platforms is increasing. It will be interesting to see if Black Duck Software's reported shift towards development for Android rather than iPhone continues.
