The business networking site LinkedIn has recently been adopted by IBM in a new feature on their Lotus Notes package. Lotus users will be able to check the profiles of LinkedIn participants directly from their Notes documents.
And a recent report from CMS Watch has identified LinkedIn as having the potential "to support enterprise-oriented social computing".
CMS Watch reports that LinkedIn is moving towards widespread acceptance as an enterprise social networking tool. In a recent report on enterprise social and collaboration software the company found that LinkedIn has better information filtering and discussion functionality than Facebook, and that both platforms are increasingly important to professionals worldwide. However LinkedIn is proving more suitable than Facebook for enterprise-oriented social computing. Tony Byrne of CMS Watch said "There is good reason for all that growth, Facebook certainly has a better "fun factor", but I'm not as sanguine about the platform's business potential as I was a year ago, whereas LinkedIn seems to be pursuing a measured plan to provide more value to the enterprise."
In a separate development IBM and LinkedIn have announced a major new partnership which will see the social networking functionality integrated into various Lotus products. The intention is that Lotus Notes users will be able to look up the profiles of email senders and Lotus Notes contacts. That will enable them to monitor their own professional networks all from within Notes.
Kevin Eyres of LinkedIn said "It is obvious to see how productivity is enhanced through this integration. Productivity is the reason why IBM and Lotus partnered with LinkedIn." Eyres said that similar collaborations were likely to be announced in the near future as LinkedIn seeks to become better integrated with the enterprise community.
