Customer survey results Print E-mail

Earlier this year we repeated our customer satisfaction survey in order to see how well, or badly, Catalysts was meeting its customers' needs. To be frank, the feedback did identify areas where we are less than perfect but it also showed that we are still providing a highly regarded and valuable service to a wide range of businesses with publishing needs. The most reassuring result was that nearly 9 out of 10 users would recommend Catalysts to a colleague. We thank all our customers for such generous support.

In the last issue of Edition News we catalogued how Catalysts got started and how the lives of two of the original staff have progressed since they left. This time we are going to take a wander through the last 20 years from a company perspective, passing by some customers, some suppliers and some staff, but mainly focusing on the business itself, its locations, its products and its operations.

Catalysts is planning an information management compliance solution for small public and private sector organisations Print E-mail

Compliance regulations now affect every organisation large and small in both the public, private and professional sectors. Large organisations have been busy for some time implementing large scale compliance and integrated search solutions to enable them to cope effectively. Their smaller brethren cannot on the whole afford a similar initial investment, which can run to hundreds of thousands of pounds, nor the time, which can be many months, that is needed for such solutions. Consequently many have struggled on as best they can relying on staff and existing systems. Their efficiency and cost effectiveness have therefore suffered disproportionately.

20 years on - where are they now? Print E-mail

Phil Bacon left Catalysts in 1996 to become Folio Corporation's 'Man in Europe', performing a diverse range of activities such as providing Folio's Partners across Europe with technical and sales support and providing consulting and training for companies using Folio Views to publish reference information.

In 1997 Folio Corporation was acquired by Open Market, one of the original Dot Com Internet start-ups who developed back-end software used by large enterprises to conduct secure high volume commerce over the Internet. Phil became an Open Market employee and was initially a Sales Engineer, later to be promoted to Technical Consultant in their Professional Services division. He reported into their Amsterdam office and became very familiar with Schipol Airport.

Catalysts – how the first 20 years got started Print E-mail

Catalysts was born as a breakaway from another company, a general IBM Reseller, by a group of people who yearned to do their own thing in more specialist fields. After a press launch at the Groucho Club it moved from its parent's location in Hastings to offices in Hove where it soon split in two. One group formed a business around image capture and display on PCs but Catalysts focused on Text Retrieval, which was just beginning to be possible on the humble PC.
